Study: Number Of Edgewater Students To Increase At Leonia School District LEONIA, N.J. -- A demographics study ordered by the Leonia Board of Education shows the number of Edgewater students who will enroll in Leonia’s middle and high schools will rise in the next few years, NorthJersey.com reported. The expected growth is largely attributable to a significant increase in Edgewater’s population, which has more than doubled in the last two decades, according to NorthJersey.com. Demarest Students Organize Epilepsy Awareness Fundraiser DEMAREST, N.J. -- Sera Savas and Orcin Akman, a pair of students from Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest, organized an epilepsy fundraiser that was held from March 22 to 24. Proceeds from the event, which came from online sales of bracelets, cups, chocolate, necklaces, pens and sunglasses, were donated to Columbia University in an effort to assist in the education of parents with epileptic children. The fundraiser coincided with Purple Day, an international awareness day for epilepsy that was held on March 26.

Rutherford Food Pantry Seeking Donations For Spring Cleaning RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The Rutherford Food Pantry is seeking donations for its spring cleaning efforts. Items needed include mops, brooms, furniture polish, glass cleaner, floor cleaner, dish soap, bathroom and kitchen cleaner and powdered cleansers such as Comet or Ajax. Other supplies in need include dusting cloths, sponges, paper towel, toilet paper, Kleenex, shower liners, laundry detergent, fabric softener and bleach. Katonah Village Library Presenting Lecture On Backyard Foraging KATONAH, N.Y. -- The Katonah Village Library is hosting a lecture on backyard foraging on Sunday, April 10, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The event, which is being held in conjunction with the Lewisboro Land Trust, will feature Ellen Zachos, author of “Backyard Foraging: 65 Familiar Plants You Didn’t Know You Could Eat.” Zachos, a Harvard graduate and long-time instructor at the New York Botanic Garden, writes regularly for the National Gardening Association and Edible magazine.

Orangetown Police Charge Pomona Man With DWI After Crash With Taxi ORANGEBURG, N.Y. -- Orangetown police have arrested a 22-year-old resident of Pomona on a DWI charge after he allegedly drove his vehicle into a taxicab and fled following the incident, police said. An Orangetown police officer saw a vehicle sideswipe a taxi on Main Street in Nyack about 2:50 a.m. Saturday, then drive away, police report. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle; the driver, identified as Timothy Mekhlin, had the odor of alcoholic on his breath and failed numerous sobriety tests at the scene, according to police. Mohegan Lake Woman Charged With DWI YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- Yorktown police have arrested Maria Varone, a 52-year-old resident of Mohegan Lake on multiple charges, including aggravated DWI, after an incident in Old Yorktown Village. Police received a call from a resident of the complex reporting a female operating a gray SUV erratically on Saturday, March 26, at approximately 3:30 p.m., officials report.
