Dobbs Ferry's Bikeworx Partners With Metro-North

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- Dobbs Ferry residents can escape, relax and experience the area in a new way with the help of Endless Trail Bikeworx on Main Street. So can New York City residents, since the bike shop began a new partnership with Metro-North Railroad.

“We brought in 250 new visitors to Dobbs Ferry last year with the program,” said Jason Cairo, owner. “We typically see two to ten people per weekend coming from the city.”

Since last summer, Bikeworx has partnered with the Metropolitan Transit Authority, which operates Metro-North, in an effort to get New York City residents cycling in rural areas, Cairo said. Residents can purchase a combination train/bike rental ticket for $35 at Grand Central Terminal, take the train to Dobbs Ferry and pick up their bike at Bikeworx, Cairo said. Customers also get a water bottle, backpack and helmet to use for the day, Cairo said.“Whether people want to admit it or not, you lose yourself on a bike,” Cairo said. “They can go outside and get something that frees them.”

Cairo bought the shop in 2009 and said business has been increasing as cycling becomes more popular. The shop also sells, repairs and rents bikes, and serves as a networking hub for local cyclists.

Bikeworx sells new mountain, road, children’s and cross-county bikes and gives customers the flexibility to customize their bikes and alter the style, color and sizes, Cairo said. The shop also offers roadside assistance repair workshops for groups of up to five people. The course covers basic repair, pointers and rules of the road, Cairo said. If the thought of teaching a child to ride a bike frightens parents, they can bring them to Bikeworx bike-riding lessons.

“We have a couple of tricks up our sleeves to teach them,” Cairo said. “We even teach adults how to ride.”

Dan Fisk said he has worked at Bikeworx for four years and stays around for the relaxed environment and plans to carry his love of cycling into his college years. “It’s a new way to see the streets you normally drive a car on,” Fisk said. “And when you’re on the trails you can become one with the woods.” Endless Trails Bikeworx is open Tuesday-Friday 11 a.m. – 7 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.
